Inter-language pragmatics (ILP) research is still in its infancy, particularly where research methodology is concerned. The overwhelming reliance on one method of data collection-production questionnaires (PQs)-is ample evidence of this. 2 Perhaps of even greater concern than the widespread use of PQs is what could be seen as the somewhat naive manner in which they have been employed. PQs have been subjected to very little methodological validation, and where they have been, the results give cause for concern. Of particular relevance to ILP are studies which have indicated that PQs produce differential effects for native speakers (NSs) and nonnative speakers (NNSs). These effects seem to be due in part to the brief descriptions of situations used in PQs, giving rise to the tendency for subjects to fill in gaps which cause difficulty in responding to questionnaire scenarios.
